The Student Special Interest Group “SIG” is a group within APTA-Mississippi that provides leadership for student PTs and PTAs across the state.
Leadership for the Student SIG is as follows:

Chairman
Erin Hederman, DPT Program, UMMC
My name is Erin Hederman, and I am a second-year Doctor of Physical Therapy student in the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s DPT program. I was born and raised in Jackson, MS and graduated from Mississippi College with a degree in Kinesiology, where I played collegiate soccer. My experience with athletics, injury, and rehabilitation inspired my passion for physical therapy and helping others improve their quality of life. Through my time at UMMC, I have seen firsthand the impact of APTA involvement and mentorship. As Chairman of the APTA Student Special Interest Group, I am excited to support student engagement, professional growth, and advocacy within the physical therapy profession – a career that has given me so much!

Co-Chairman
Trey Ellison, DPT Program, UMMC
My name is Trey Ellison, and I am a DPT student at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. I’m originally from Ridgeland, Mississippi, and I graduated from Ole Miss, where my interest in physical therapy really began to grow. I’ve always enjoyed this profession and am passionate about contributing to its expansion and future impact. Last year, I had the privilege of serving as the APTA-MS SSIG Co-Chairman, a role I truly enjoyed—especially working with our team to successfully organize and host the APTA Trivia Night. Furthermore, before PT school, I interned in Washington, D.C. for Senator Roger Wicker, which gave me firsthand experience with legislation and professional advocacy and further strengthened my commitment to advancing our field. I’m excited to continue serving this year as Co-Chairman and look forward to helping support student involvement and promote the growth of our profession across Mississippi.

Secretary/Treasurer
Jolie Matherne, DPT Program, WCU
My name is Jolie Matherne, and I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy student at William Carey University. Throughout my time at Carey, I have served as an SPTA representative for my class and currently serve as the SPTA President. These roles have strengthened my leadership, organization, and communication skills while allowing me to enhance student involvement and build meaningful professional relationships. I have a strong interest in neurological rehabilitation and hope to continue developing my skills in this practice area as I progress through the program. As a member of the SSIG Executive Board, I am excited for the opportunity to represent my program, help increase student involvement, and support initiatives that help bring PT and PTA students together.

Special Events Committee Chairman
Mar’Ques McCray, PTA Program, MCC
My name is Mar’Ques McCray, and I am a Physical Therapist Assistant student working toward licensure. I earned my bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi, where I also competed in track and field, and I am a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. I am passionate about patient-centered care, clinical safety, and clear communication. I look forward to contributing to the mission of the APTA and advancing healthcare outcomes in my community.
